Surface acoustic waves for acousto-optic modulation in buried silicon nitride waveguides

چکیده
We theoretically investigate the use of Rayleigh surface acoustic waves (SAWs) for refractive index modulation in optical waveguides consisting of amophous dielectrics. Considering low-loss Si3N4 waveguides with a standard core cross section of 4.4×0.03 μm size, buried 8-μm deep in a SiO2 cladding we compare surface acoustic wave generation in various different geometries via a piezo-active, lead zirconate titanate film placed on top of the surface and driven via an interdigitized transducer (IDT). Using numerical solutions of the acoustic and optical wave equations, we determine the strain distribution of SAW modes under resonant excitation, and the electric field distribution of the fundamental optical mode near the waveguide core. From the overlap of the acoustic strain field with the optical mode field we calculate and maximize the attainable amplitude of index modulation in the waveguide. For the example of a near-infrared wavelength of 840 nm, a maximum relative refractive index modulation of 1.2x10−3 was obtained for an IDT period of 30 μm, a film thickness of 4 μm, and using an IDT voltage and modulation frequency of 10 V and 90 MHz, respectively. This relative index change is about 300-times higher than in previous work based on non-resonant proximity piezo-actuation, and the modulation frequency is about 200-times higher. Exploiting the maximum relative index change of 1.2×10−3 in a MachZehnder modulator should allow full-contrast modulation in devices as

A parallel, 64K-channel implementation of the acousto-optic method of imaging optical contrasts buried in organs is presented. This implementation also associates this method with echography in a single apparatus. This allows us to prove that sensitivity to purely optical contrast is achieved. Moreover, this enables any potential user to distinguish easily optical contrast, acoustic contrast, a...
متن کاملGermanium as a material for stimulated Brillouin scattering in the mid-infrared.
In a theoretical design study, we propose buried waveguides made of germanium or alloys of germanium and other group-IV elements as a CMOS-compatible platform for robust, high-gain stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) applications in the mid-infrared regime. To this end, we present numerical calculations for backward-SBS at 4 μm in germanium waveguides that are buried in silicon nitride. Due t...
متن کاملHigh-contrast optical modulation by surface acoustic waves
Numerical calculations are employed to study the modulation of light by surface acoustic waves (SAWs) in photonic band gap (PBG) structures. The on/off contrast ratio in a PBG switch based on an optical cavity is determined as a function of the SAW-induced dielectric modulation. We show that these structures exhibit high contrast ratios even for moderate acousto-optic coupling. PACS: 42.79.Ta, ...
متن کاملThermal stress implications in athermal TiO2 waveguides on a silicon substrate.
Ring resonators with TiO2 core confinement factors from 0.07 to 0.42 are fabricated and measured for thermal sensitivity achieving -2.9 pm/K thermal drift in the best case. Materials used are CMOS compatible (TiO2, SiO2 and Si3N4) on a Si substrate. The under discussed role of stress in thermo-optic behavior is clearly observed when contrasting waveguides buried in SiO2 to those with etched sid...
